Konawaena rebounded with a 25-23, 25-21 win over University in a HHSAA state volleyball tournament consolation match on Friday at Farrington High.

Chanelle Molina pounded 12 kills and hit .357 and McKenna Ventura added six kills for the BIIF champion Wildcats (20-1), who play for fifth place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blaidell Center.

Molina also posted her second straight double-double with 10 digs. Ventura followed with nine digs and Cherilyn Molina had seven digs.

Gabrielle Lau had five kills for the Junior Bows (12-5).

In the four-set quarterfinal loss to Le Jardin, which never qualified for states before, Chanelle Molina steered the offense and defense with 25 kills on a .246 attack percentage and 25 digs.

But it wasn’t enough.

The ILH runner-up Bulldogs had that consistent firepower and production in their two outside hitters Kassidy Naone, who had 26 kills and hit .260, and Natalie Piper, who added 11 kills on a .146 clip.

In something of a surprise, Le Jardin, smaller across the board, outblocked Kona, 11-6. Arianna Lunow-Luke led the Bulldogs with four blocks, including three solo. She’s a 5-foot-8 sophomore setter.

Le Jardin has just one senior in libero Taylor Souza, who finished with 15 digs. Piper led charge with 23 digs.

How did a state novice beat a two-time defending state champion with tons of experience with eight seniors?

Except for the first set, the Bulldogs had a higher attack percentage and fewer hitting errors. That was a deadly combination the Wildcats couldn’t counter, despite a highlight performance from Molina.

• Kapaa def. Hawaii Prep 21-25, 25-17, 15-5 for seventh place: The Warriors from Kauai outhit Ka Makani, .244-.038, and had more kills, 33-23.

Haaheo Mahinai slammed 10 kills with a .600 attack percentage to lead Kapaa (13-5).

Madi Lee had 10 kills while seniors Haley Dow and Kaui Taylor, had six and five kills, respectively, for HPA (10-12).

• Waiakea def. Kalaheo 25-22. 25-21: The BIIF Division I champion Warriors (16-4) advance to the fifth-place match at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Blaisdell Center.
